Similipal National Park – The Ground of Tigers

SimilipalNational Park the ground of Tigers is a tiger reserve located in the Indian state of Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district. It is the second largest national park in India. This national park is also a part of the Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve (Similipal – Kuldiha-Hadgarh Elephant Reserve). The area covered by these three wonderful destinations are – Similipal Tiger Reserve – 2750.00 km2  , Hadgarh Wildlife Sanctuary – 191.06 km2  and Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary – 272.75 km2. These places are heaven for the animals those live here and equal for the tourist those visit here. Inside the 845.70 square kilometers (326.53 sq mi) protected area of SimilipalNational Park is the home of 99 royal Bengal tigers and 432 wild elephants. Along with this gaurs (Indian bison), Chausingha and Orchidarium are the important attractions for tourist in Similipal.

Geography, Climate, Flora and fauna of Similipal National Park

From geographic point of view the SimilipalNational Park has an area of 2,750 square kilometres (1,060 sq mi) that is located in Mayurbhanj, Odisha, India. Here the climate is over all good but during summers temperatures goes around 40 °C (104 °F) whereas during winter, it can be as low as 14 °C (57 °F). The rainfall, here from moderate range to heavy range. It’s dense Thick and green forests consist with mainly ‘sal’ trees and with many other types of plants approximately 1076 species of plants belonging to 102 families.Inside this forest around 42 species of mammals, 242 species of birds and 30 species of reptiles are living. The major mammals include tiger, leopard, Asian elephant, Sambar, Barking deer, Gaur, Jungle cat, Wild boar, Chausingha (four horned antelope), giant squirrel and common langur and also 231 species of birds nest in these forests. That creates an amazingly wonderful place for tourist to explore various types of tress and animals.

Air: The nearest airports are Bhubaneswar (270 km) and Kolkata (240 km). A straight drive down from Kolkata is more convenient. Cabs are available from here to get to resorts and the national park.

Rail: The nearest railway station is Balasore (60 km from Baripada). From here major trains run on the South-Eastern sector.
